Ruth's Genealogy

“I don't know who my grandfather was; I am much more concerned to know what his grandson will be.” -Abraham Lincoln

Lidian of The Virtual Dime Museum has tagged me for a meme. I have never done a meme before, but it sounds like great fun, so here goes…
Question 1: What issues/topic interests you most–non-fiction, i.e,cooking, knitting, stitching, there are infinite topics that has nothing to do with novels?
American history, especially the Civil War period, is absolutely fascinating to me. I have always been a history nut, but back in the fall of 1990, I was channel surfing one night and landed on the local PBS station. The Civil War, by Ken Burns, was on. After about 2 minutes of watching that one program, I was hopelessly hooked! Those black and white images by Mathew Brady, combined with the actual music of the period, and David McCullough’s voice, wow…indescribable! I guess that’s why I’m so into genealogy: it’s all history, after all. I can’t get enough of it! So basically, I love to read anything American History.
I also love biographies. I read anything I can find about Abraham Lincoln, Teddy Roosevelt and Robert E. Lee.
And this freaks my kids out, but I also love true crime books, especially those about sociopaths. I just wanna know what’s going on in their heads, why they do the things they do.
Question 2:
Would you like to review books concerning those?
I suppose… I’ve never really thought about it. I read a book because it’s interesting to me. That doesn’t mean that another person would like the same book that I like.
Question 3:
Would you like to be paid or do it as interest or hobby? Tell reasons for what ever you choose.
Definitely just as an interest or hobby. For one thing, I don’t write that well. I mean, I can write a coherent sentence, with correct grammar and spelling, but I don’t have the gift of being able to write. I would love to be a writer, but if ya ain’t got it, ya ain’t got it! I think it is something you’re born with, like art or singing. Also, I like what I like, but that doesn’t mean everyone else will like the same thing.
Question 4:
Would you recommend those to your friends and how?
Yes, for people with the same interests as me. My youngest daughter is studying criminal science at college, so she has recently gotten interested in some of the same true crime books that I have read, because of her studies. Kinda nice to be able to talk about something with another person who is also interested. As for genealogy, neither of my girls could care less! They are just not interested. My oldest daughter has helped me from time to time on the technical aspects (she’s a computer whiz!), and I think she humors me occasionally when I really start babbling about a new research find, but that’s about it.
Question 5:
If you have already done something like this, link it to your post.
Nope, something for the future, maybe…

Now I gotta tag 10 people: I think the folks I would want to tag have already been tagged and I don’t want to be a pest…

Thanks Lidian, this has been a bunch of fun! Now, I gotta get back to work on my time line… 🙂

Hi Ruth – I loved the Ken Burns Civil War series – wish I owned it on DVD, maybe Santa will bring it next Christmas! And I forgot to mntion on my meme, but I am secretly very keen on true crime books – maybe that’s why I forgot! My family knows but I don’t flap the book covers around, really.I am reading an Ann Rule right now. She is really good. I like Victorian true crime too, Jack the Ripper etc.
